The old saying, “You never worry about water until the well goes dry,” is only too apt in a number of situations. Most of us think little about our water supply – all we need to do is turn on the tap, after all. Unfortunately, a number of emergencies and disasters can interrupt the power supply which will mean that there is no way for us to get water in the normal way. Although it is said that a person can live 3 days without water, this will only apply to ideal conditions, and if the weather is hot, you will definitely need water much earlier than this. Having an emergency supply of safe, pure water on hand will mean that your family will remain well hydrated until things are back to normal.
One of the easiest ways to secure safe emergency water is by storing some in our Water Barrels, which come in 30 or 55 gallon sizes. Purified water will keep fresh for years, especially if the water is treated with Water Preserver, and the size of these barrels will mean that your family will be able to enjoy safe water during a disaster. You will find it even easier to use the barrels if you attach our Water Pump to them. The pump actually contains a filter element while will further assure the quality of your water. This pump can also be used with nearly any container, or even in a lake, pond, or stream.
Always bear in mind that even though water may look clean and clear, it can be filled with both organic and inorganic contaminants. Bacteria, viruses, cysts, and parasites are generally invisible to the naked eye – the safety of any water can never be assured by its appearance. If your water source (either because of an emergency or when out in the wilderness) is questionable, it is always better to purify it before use. Germicidal Tablets will remove nearly every organic pathogen from the water without leaving an undesirable aftertaste.
Filtering units are yet another way to provide pure, safe water either at home or when camping or hiking. Depending on the model, you can filter up to 200 gallons of water before the filter element must be changed. These units, such as the Katadyn – Hiker Micro-filter Unit, will render ‘found’ water safe to drink.
Providing pure water during an emergency is not the daunting task it might seem at first, all it needs is a little bit of planning and the use of the proper equipment.
