Emergency Shelters

You will probably be surprised to learn that of the three essentials for survival – food, water, and shelter – that shelter is the one that must be taken care of first. Under poor weather condition, either cold or very hot, it is considered that a human being can survive unprotected for only about 3 hours. Getting and staying warm under survival conditions when the weather is cold is extremely important in preventing hypothermia, which is a potentially life-threatening condition.

Blankets have always been an excellent way to provide needed warmth, and we offer two blankets that can help to retain body heat in any circumstance. Part of the US Space Program was aimed at developing equipment that could assist in survival in extreme circumstances, and the Emergency Solar Blanket is the result of this research. This blanket will help to retain nearly all of your body heat, and is also handy to use for an emergency shelter.

There is hardly a warmer fabric on earth than wool, and it is also one of the few materials that will be warm even if wet. This only makes sense when you realize that sheep live outside year round in most places, and if their wool drew off body heat when it became wet, there soon would be no more sheep. You can take advantage of this with our 50% Wool Blanket, which is a generous size. Wrapping this around yourself during an emergency or when on a camping or hiking trip can really chase away the cold.

Keeping clean either during an emergency or when on a camping trip can present some interesting challenges. While hot water for a bathing can come from a Campers Solar Shower, no one is going to want to do this in front of an audience. You can count on one of our privacy shelters to allow you to shower without worry, as you would right in your home. These shelters can be used not only for staying clean, but also in combination with a Port-A-Potty. Our Privacy Shelter and Deluxe Privacy & Shower Room are a great way to bring a bit of civilization to more rugged conditions.

Sleeping on the floor or ground does not ensure a restful night. Besides the usual food and water, some emergency bedding could make everyone more comfortable should a disaster such as an earthquake or tornado make your home uninhabitable. Our cot and folding bed are easy to store when not in use, and also make it easier to accommodate unexpected overnight guests.
