Emergency Kits For Your Car
Ordinary
Roadside Trouble
None of us is a stranger to the
occasional roadside breakdown or other trouble. Cars can slide off the road in
winter or overheat during the summer. Having a few handy items in your
emergency kit for times such as these can make the wait for the tow truck much
more comfortable for everyone. Your basic emergency kit should include some
water, non-perishable food, emergency blanket, flashlight, and light stick or
other means of alerting other drivers that your car is experiencing trouble. A
cell phone would definitely make life much easier at a time like this.
When
You Must Evacuate
While many disasters and emergencies
can be gotten through at home, there are times when the events are so
catastrophic that you and your family must evacuate. In this case, it is to be
hoped that you already have several vital emergency kits already in your car.
You should have a basic emergency kit that will supply water and food to
everyone in the family for at least one day, preferably three. This kit should
also contain emergency blankets or sleeping bags, and you should probably
include some extra pieces of clothing, as well. You should also have some extra
money hidden in your emergency kit, as there may not be time to get to a bank
if there is the need for an immediate evacuation. A first aid kit will be an
absolute necessity, and there should either be one in the car already, or
easily accessible when you leave.
Pet
Emergency Kit
If you own any pets, you will also
have to make sure that there is an emergency kit in the car for them. Some
extra food, a pet first aid kit, leash, and crate for a cat will be needed. Any
medication the animal is taking must be brought along, too. Pets will be
totally unable to care for themselves in a disaster situation, and must be
taken along like any other member of the family.
Special
Needs Emergency Kits
Not all members of a family are
healthy adults, many times there are children, or babies present. If your
family has a baby in it, this small individual will have specific needs that
will have to be met. If the child is not being nursed, adequate formula should
be brought along. As premixed formula is available, it should be easy to
include this. Diapers will need to be changed wherever you are, and a supply of
disposable diapers is necessary. Babies are much more likely to suffer from
hypothermia during cold weather because of their small body size, so warm
clothing and an extra blanket are called for.
If you have elderly or chronically
ill people in your family, their needs will also have to be met. Medication for
those who need it should be available, and ask the doctor to provide extra just
in case of an emergency. Copies of prescriptions are also good to have and
contact numbers for physicians and hospitals should be in this emergency kit,
too.
